UN Ends Sanctions on Syria's Leader Before Presidential Visit
United Nations Security Council members gave the green light to an American proposal removing restrictions on Syria's leader Ahmed al-Sharaa ahead of his presidential meeting the coming week.
He became interim leader following his leadership in a rebel offensive that drove out the previous leader in December 2024, ending over a decade of internal conflict.
The US representative to the UN Mike Waltz declared the global body transmitted "a strong political signal" that affirmed Syria's transition into "a new era" following Assad's ouster.
He had been subject to UN sanctions while commanding the Islamist group HTS, once connected to the terrorist network. America delisted the group from its registry of international terrorist organizations in July.
Further Restrictions Lifted
Furthermore, global sanctions were ended on restrictions targeting Syria's Interior Minister the interior minister.
The nation's top diplomat welcomed the removal of the sanctions, declaring through digital channels: "Syrian officials convey thanks to the United States and to friendly nations for their support of Syria and its people."
Upcoming White House Meeting
Sharaa's White House visit this coming Monday comes after American leader Donald Trump said the Syrian leader achieved "significant advancement" in establishing peace to the previously divided state.
The two leaders convened on their first occasion in May, when Trump visited Riyadh on a tour of Arab nations.
Following that encounter, the US president described Sharaa as a "tough guy" possessing a "powerful background".
The HTS organization he led served as al-Qaeda's branch in Syria before he cut connections back in 2016.
Prior United States Journey
Monday's visit does not represent the president's debut journey to the United States in the current year. This past fall, he emerged as the first Syrian leader to speak before the global assembly at UN headquarters for nearly six decades.
Throughout his presentation, he stated the country had been "restoring its proper position within the global community" and demonstrated unity toward Gaza's residents.
