South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem Tours Oregon Immigration and Customs Enforcement Center Alongside MAGA Influencers
Kristi Noem, currently serving as the homeland security secretary, inspected the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office in Portland, Oregon on this week. During her visit, she saw firsthand a small gathering outside, which differs significantly to the dramatic "blockade" described by Donald Trump.
Accompanied by MAGA Personalities
Noem was accompanied by a trio of conservative influencers who were transported from the airport to the facility in her motorcade. The Department of Homeland Security has shared escalating social media content showing federal agents performing enforcement operations and deploying crowd control measures at protesters.
Gathering Outside
Portland police cleared the street outside the facility in the southern Portland area before the Noem's appearance. A handful protesters, among them one dressed as a bird and another as a baby shark, were kept at a distance.
Music was audible from a gathering spot nearby, with words mentioning Trump and allegations. A demonstrator yelled to a government videographer documenting from the facility's roof, questioning whether the homeland security had been dubbed the "propaganda department".
Media Access
Members of the press from nonpartisan news outlets were also held behind the barrier outside, while the conservative personalities in her party—Benny Johnson, Nick Sortor, and David Media—broadcast digital content of the secretary participating in federal agents in a prayer session inside, delivering a pep talk, and instructing a soldier of the Oregon National Guard to "Prepare".
Recent Rulings
Noem has supported the Trump's assertions that the group of protesters—who have assembled in their small numbers outside the ICE facility since June, including one in an frog outfit—are "terrorists" who have placed the facility "in a state of siege", making the sending of government forces essential.
However, on Saturday, a court official in the city blocked the former president's effort to federalize the state's guard, stating that the president’s claims that the largely peaceful city was "being destroyed" were "without evidence".
A day later, the court official, Judge Immergut—who was appointed to the bench by Trump—extended the decision to prohibit guard members from elsewhere from being used in Portland. She acted after the former president reacted to her first order by seeking to send members of the California National Guard to Oregon.
Increased Confrontations
Following Trump highlighted the limited yet ongoing gathering outside the office and made unsubstantiated allegations that Portland is "in a state of war", a rising count of his supporters, including MAGA influencers, have arrived to challenge the protesters.
Several of these confrontations have led to scuffles and brawls, leading to apprehensions by the officers. A conservative personality was taken into custody after he attempted to push through a demonstration site on a walkway near the ICE facility and was engaged in a fight over an national banner. Sortor had earlier removed the flag from a individual who was setting it on fire.
The charges against the influencer were later dropped after an protest in partisan press induced the chief of the rights office of the DOJ, the division head, to suggest a review of the local police over alleged political bias.
Two individuals the influencer was detained over a conflict with still are under legal scrutiny.
Official Responses
On Sunday, the state's governor, the governor, alleged DHS agents in the site of trying to provoke the protesters by using excessive quantities of chemical irritants in a local community and inviting right-wing personalities to record the gathering from the upper level of the building. "They are deliberately inciting," she commented.
Several of those right-wing personalities were described in a police report last month as "opposing demonstrators" who "frequently reappear and provoke the demonstrators until they are assaulted or exposed to irritants" and refuse "frequent warnings from officers to avoid" the protesters.
Influencer Activities
A conservative personality, a former journalist who transitioned as a partisan figure after being fired from a media outlet for ethical violations, posted footage of Noem observing from the roof of the ICE facility at the limited number of individuals below, including a protest organizer who dons a fowl suit to ridicule Donald Trump. The influencer captioned the clip of Noem observing the peaceful setting below: "Governor Noem faces off against radicals and a chicken-clad individual".
Despite the disconnect between the assertions from the former president and the secretary that this facility is "besieged" from "radicals" and visible proof of a handful of individuals in peaceful clothing, the personalities with the secretary continued to describe the protesters as threatening extremists.
Meeting with Police Chief
While in Portland, Governor Noem also met with the Portland police chief, Chief Day, who has been portrayed as "woke" in partisan press for permitting his personnel to apprehend the influencer. In a online post on the discussion, Johnson stated that the police head had "aligned with violent ANTIFA militants assaulting journalists and officers outside ICE facility".
Noem’s motorcade then drove out the office past a few of protesters on the street outside, including one dressed as a bear wearing a headgear.
