The green light was given to Hazlewood to become part of Australia's squad for the initial Test against England following fitness concerns, however, teammate Abbott has been ruled out

Each encountered hamstring injuries during their match for their state team in the Victoria clash in the Sheffield Shield recently

Scans showed the 34-year-old Hazlewood escaped a muscle strain. Abbott, 33, who hasn't played Tests, suffered a moderate-level injury

Team captain Cummins is out of the opening Test, commencing later this month, so the loss of another experienced fast bowler such as Hazlewood would have been a significant setback

Abbott was not expected to participate during the Western Australia Test, with Hazlewood set to join fellow quicks Starc and Boland as the specialist seamers

Cummins, who is recovering from back issues, is expected to be likely to comeback during the next Test beginning December 4 in Brisbane

Top-order player Smith will captain the side in Cummins' absence

Similar to most the Australia players, the bowler took part in recent matches of state games in preparation for the England series

Until this match, he hadn't featured domestic first-class games with his state team since last season

He experienced stiffness in his posterior chain towards the end of the opposition's batting recently and left the field taking preventive measures

Both players came out to bat during the follow-on innings during their defeat by 300 runs

"We're a week away before the international cricket - always err on the side of caution," said Cummins

"They needed to determine the nature of the problem ahead of risking that could worsen the condition"

"Uncommon to see him upbeat, so it was good observing his positive demeanor"

"He understands his physique extremely well. I think he was a little bit worried (and) wanted to get medical assessment"

Abbott earned 57 appearances representing Australia in white-ball cricket

Without Test experience Brendan Doggett is the other seamer among the selections, providing cover for the primary fast bowlers
