Diving into a Bizarre Steam Demo: Controlling a Turdy Character in a Mission to Reach the Toilet
Steam Next Fest is in full swing, and gamers have encountered numerous engaging independent titles. But, one catches the eye for its unconventional concept. Called Unko Technica, this retro-inspired jumping adventure features a character that is actually a dung attempting to make its way to a commode. In case you're wondering, "Unko" translates to "poop."
How you interact is easy to grasp: press a one button to leap. In 150 levels, battle mini-bosses and unlock a market to buy skins for your fecal avatar.
Plan your movements with caution, since one error means restarting the level. Bounce off floating orbs to propel yourself higher, navigate crumbling surfaces, and activate triggers to reveal secret routes. Collect coins and use them on more difficult stages as things ramps up.
Visually, the experience boasts vibrant stages and a killer background music. Its minimalist art with morphing abstract forms evokes memories of fans of old favorites like Earthbound.
Even though difficult to recall previous releases where you play as a coiled turd, interactive entertainment frequently included fecal matter. For example, in Death Stranding, you can create throwables from character excrement. Games like Palworld and Ark: Survival Evolved employ feces as soil enrichment. Naturally, fecal references appears extensively in Obsidian's role-playing game The Stick of Truth.
Despite its goofy idea, Unko Technica has already received notable accolades, including winning at Bandai Namco's indie contest in 2023. This trial version is available at present on Steam, with the final release planned to debut on Steam in the fall.
