China's Ice Dancers Face Probe Following Holding Toy Missile at Event

ISU officials are conducting a formal inquiry following a pair of Chinese figure skaters were seen with an object resembling a toy ballistic missile at a grand prix figure skating event.

Television video showed the skaters waiting alongside a sizable prop in the form of a missile marked “DF-61” while waiting for their scores at the “kiss and cry” zone on Saturday.

The DF-61 represents a new Chinese-made land-based intercontinental ballistic missile designed for transporting atomic warheads, which was unveiled during a national ceremony recently.

Officials is aware that an inappropriate plush item seems to have been among those thrown on to the rink by audience members following a performance at the ISU Figure Skating Grand Prix Cup of China event,” the organization stated in an emailed statement.

The item was subsequently handled by the athletes who had just performed. We regrets this occurrence and will investigate further.”

Ren and Xing finished in eighth place of 10 pairs during the ice dancing competition, which was won by the American pair of the United States.
