British government has included an additional eleven more countries to its official warning register regarding the dangers of methanol toxicity from adulterated spirits.

This revised travel guidance features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following evidence showing "a worldwide rise in the number of documented incidents" of methanol contamination.

Just last month, officials had previously added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing register, after a number of notable events including the fatal loss of six visitors in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being warned that as little as tiny quantities of industrial alcohol can cause permanent eye damage or fatality within 12–48 hrs.

What is Industrial Alcohol and In what way is it Utilized?

Methanol is a toxic chemical often utilized in antifreeze, windscreen washer fluid, and paint solvent. It is not meant for human consumption.

While it is inherently formed during the production of alcoholic drinks, commercial firms bring it down to low, safe levels for drinking through the refining procedure.

But in certain nations, it is illegally mixed into spirits to cut costs, and because it is tasteless and scentless, it is very difficult to detect.

Official Guidance for Travelers

Government official Hamish Falconer stated that each tourist should know the symptoms of methanol poisoning.

"If you're consuming alcohol abroad, choose reputable establishments and steer clear of homemade alcohol or free shots," the minister advised.

"In case something appears suspicious, like a hangover that's way worse than typical or vision problems – get medical help fast."

The complete register of destinations noted as posing a risk of toxic alcohol toxicity presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
